How do dental implants work?

After scheduling an appointment at Charlotte Dental Implant Center, located in Charlotte, NC, our dental implant specialist (Dr. Rush Sunar) will have a consultation with you. First, Dr. Sunar will thoroughly evaluate the site for implant placement, both clinically and radiographically, to make sure the site can take an implant. He will then proceed to do a simulated surgery on the computer before he touches a patient’s teeth. The procedure itself is done under local anesthesia. He prepares the implant site by using what is called osteotomy drills and then carefully places it in the bone in a pre-planned position. The entire procedure is a painless experience.

Once the implant has been placed, a process called ossteointegration begins in which the implant becomes a part of your jawbone. Typically, the osteointegration takes a few months. During this time, Dr. Sunar can fit you with a temporary restoration affixed to the implant and can monitor your progress.

When your implant is ready and has become fused to your jawbone, you return to the office to start restoration with crown or bridge process.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium posts that are surgically inserted into your jawbone which eventually supports a tooth. Once an implant has been placed, it is used to support natural-looking prosthetic teeth that improve your smile.

Research has shown that dental implants are sturdy, durable, and long-lasting. They look, feel, and function just like natural teeth.

Are there different types of implants?

Yes, there are different types of dental implants. At the Charlotte Dental Implant Center, Dr. Sunar offers a variety of implant restorations, including:

  • Single tooth implants - If you’re missing a single tooth, an implant can be used to fill that gap in your smile. With a single tooth implant, you can replace the missing tooth without sacrificing any of the structural components of the surrounding teeth.

  • Multiple teeth implants - If you’re missing numerous teeth, sets of implants can be used to replace them. Depending on the size of the gap in your smile, a single implant or multiple implants may be used to support prosthetic teeth, a crown, or a bridge.

  • Implants in the esthetic zone - These implants, which are also called anterior implants, are used to replace visible front teeth. This type of implant restoration involves a slightly more detailed procedure, due to the sensitive bone and tissue.

How long do dental implants last?

If you take excellent care of your implant restoration, there’s no reason it can’t last a lifetime. Make sure to treat it like you would a natural tooth and brush and floss regularly. Also, make sure to maintain regular visits with Dr. Sunar for general upkeep. As your mouth naturally changes, your implant may need minor alterations from time to time.
